The Friendly Photographer featured an interview with Elizabeth in their blog for photographers.  It was such an honour to be invited.  Here’s the article.

Elizabeth Kowal is one part of the fantastic wedding duo White Album Weddings. Her work is real, romantic and full of emotion. After 10+ years in the biz, Elizabeth has some real insight to share with us, and some absolutely gorgeous images too!

Where do you call home?

My husband Mark (he’s the other half of White Album Weddings) and I live and work out of a sweet little heritage chapel in the country that we use as a studio and our home. We have been here since 2005 when we discovered it after a friend mentioned the building was for sale. When we walked in and saw the sunlight reflected on the worn hardwood floors, the wooden doors with old door knobs, and beautiful tall windows we fell madly in love. It’s an inspiring place to run our photography business!

What do you try to capture in your images?

Everything! As wedding photographers we need to be ready photograph in all kinds of situations. Candid and posed portraits, emotions, and details. I am happiest when I’ve captured an emotion, a touch, or the little in between moments when a couple lets their guard down. I also truly believe that everyone is uniquely beautiful. We photograph real people, not models, and I love seeing a client’s reaction to seeing their photos when they see that in themselves!

Where do you look for inspiration?

Lifestyle magazines. Vogue is always one of my favourites. Some blogs I’ve been following lately are Willow & Frank, Erik Almas, and The Minimalist Mom. And of course, I love PintErest for inspiration!

What has been your greatest learning experience as a photographer?

That everyone is on their own path. To not worry about what everyone else is doing or what the latest trend is. I am also learning that I don’t have to always be busy to be successful. It’s so important to take time for yourself and for family.

What is your best piece of advice for your fellow photographers?

Set your priorities. Be organized. Simplify. It’s so easy to get overwhelmed in this business especially when you are passionate about what you do. Don’t forget to make room in your life for fun. I’m still learning this myself!

What does being a friendly photographer mean to you?

To me it means collaborating and working together with other vendors and photographers in the industry. Being a photographer and working from home can be lonely if you don’t reach out and we can be a great resource for each other. It means being open to share but still being true to yourself in your art rather than following trends.
